But at least it was a valve amp right? From the biggest name in the business. Not that the Marshall DSL401 was that expensive, in fact it was the cheapest valve guitar amp in the store. This was around about time of my Gibson Les Paul Standard acquisition, where I was focussed on purchasing expensive gear for maximum tone. It was more than a match for the Fender Performer 1000, and as such the band ‘Columbia’ did some good things.Īfter ‘Columbia’, I indulged in home recording for while. It give me my start in a real band, developed my playing and taught me about how different gain structures work in a band context. Ultra reliable, versatile, and with that unmistakably square Marshall push. So, for the foreseeable future at least, the 3-Channel Marshall VS100R delivered without missing a beat. Madness? Well, this wasn’t the first time I’d trade in gear porn for the sake of practicality. he offered me a brand new channel switching VS100R as a straight swap. As the guy was drooling over the original 60’s plug (still intact). … And that’s where the Marshall Valvestate VS100R came in. The best I’d ever heard it sound, but by now it was too late, I’d made my decision. ‘Instant Kinks’ he proudly exclaimed as he cranked it up close to max, distorting it beautifully to an appreciative audience. Of course, the guy in the shop fell in love. Luckily this AC30 had castors, so when I eventually made it over the cobles of Newcastle back-streets to the shop, I was surprised to find the vibrations hadn’t killed it for good. And then from the bus to the guitar shop, not even knowing if I could exchange or sell it on. Oh, and it was back-breakingly heavy, and would break down frequently, especially when making frequent trips up stairs and on buses like I was doing at the time.įirst of all I had to get the behemoth of the Vox AC30 from the practice room storage onto a bus. My overdrive pedal knowledge was still in its infancy at this time too, so, although I had an amazing clean tone, getting a workable drive tone out of it proved to be a frustrating challenge, even with the now sought after original Marshall Guvnor overdrive in the front.

What I did know was that I now had the ultimate guitar amplifier in my hands.īut the sad thing was, I would never hear it as it was intended, a full tilt with the power valves cooking as it was just far too loud.

Maybe he was passing it onto me after a lifetime of gigging? Who knows. It came into my possession from a bandmate and I suppose mentor at the time. This was the real deal with the fabled Celestion Blues. Probably the most iconic guitar amplifier ever made, particularly for Queen fans, as I am.

You are right though, it does sound like a Marshall, the Marshall MG series that is.My first 1×12 combo amplifier but hardly a step-up from the flyspec as the overdrive channel was so bad. No matter what you do or say, it's still a solid state Marshall with one 12ax7 thrown in the mix. However, if you're happy with the amp then that's great, but don't try to convince those of us who've recorded hundred and thousands of guitar tracks with dozens of different amps, that your AVT is on par with a real tube amp. Several of these guys have since moved on to what they feel are better amps. Even their bandmates would comment on the dramatic difference. Every single solitary time they've picked one of my tube amps over their AVT's. I allow them to with the stipulation that they at least let me use one of my amps after they've used theirs.

At first they give me the "it's my sound" crap and they just insist on using their AVT. What's funny is the AVT owners always end up using one of my amps instead. Since I've worked with many many amps, including several more AVT's. The AVT sounded thin and lifeless compared to the Mesa which sounded huge and rich. I could instantly hear the difference between the two, and not just because they're made by different companies. You're just another guy that subscribes to a false notion that is nothing more than propaganda. If he's just basing his opinion on propaganda that's fine and I understand your argument, but then what about me? I actually owned an AVT50 for a long time and recorded it a ton before I got a Mesa Boogie DC-3 all tube amp.

Plus I installed a Weber Silver Bell in mine with an Alnico magnet. There really ain't a whole lot wrong with them and they sound like a Marshall cuz they are a Marshall. Marshall's hybrid amps sound remarkably good.
